The Canadian Council of Churches acknowledges the March 31st deadline for response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action #48—namely, that
“. . . church parties to the Settlement Agreement, and all other faith groups and interfaith social justice groups in Canada who have not already done so . . . formally adopt and comply with the principles, norms, and standards of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for reconciliation.”
On this momentous occasion—which is extremely significant in the on-going process of reconciliation in Canada—the CCC:
- Re-issues the consensus statement (attached; en français) made by our 25 member denominations, representing more than 85% of the Christians in Canada, to the final national meeting of the TRC in Edmonton in 2014.
- Renews its commitment to moving forward in the directions articulated by the statement.
- Invites its member denominations to sign on to TRC Call to Action #48.
- Names reconciliation as a major priority for the next years of the life of the CCC.
