Cesar Jaramillo appointed Ploughshares Executive Director

cesar 4Project Ploughshares is pleased to announce the appointment of Cesar Jaramillo as Executive Director, effective July 1, 2015.

Cesar has spent the past six years as Program Officer at Project Ploughshares, working on such program areas as nuclear disarmament, outer space security, and conventional weapons control. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with an MA in global governance and has undergraduate degrees in political science and journalism. Prior to joining Project Ploughshares, Cesar held a Fellowship at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a Canadian think-tank that addresses international governance challenges.

Cesar’s input on complex international security issues is sought by both colleagues and media. His perspective and commentary have been featured in The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, the weekly newspaper Embassy, the Waterloo Region Record, and newspapers abroad; he has been interviewed by broadcasters Al Jazeera, CBC Radio Canada International, and Global News, among others. He has also advanced Project Ploughshares’ objectives through guest lectures and presentations at academic institutions such as the National Law University in New Delhi (India), the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, and the University of Toronto.

As an international civil society representative, Cesar has addressed the United Nations General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, the UN Conference on Disarmament, and meetings of states parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Cesar is the third Executive Director in Project Ploughshares’ 39-year history. He succeeds John Siebert, who has led the organization since 2005 and who, in turn, succeeded Ernie Regehr, O.C., the organization’s cofounder and first Executive Director. The Governing Committee and staff feel privileged and delighted to continue working with Cesar in his new capacity. His experience, skills, and commitment promise to further enhance the work and effectiveness of Project Ploughshares.

Project Ploughshares is an agency of The Canadian Council of Churches, with a mandate to work with churches, governments, and nongovernmental organizations, in Canada and internationally, to identify, develop, and advance approaches that build peace and prevent war, and promote the peaceful resolution of political conflict. It is affiliated with the MSCU Centre for Peace Advancement, Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
