In a recent meeting of the Christian Interfaith Reference Group (CIRG), a discussion ensued on the proposed Charter of Quebec Values. Although seemingly a provincial issue, committee members agreed that religious freedom is an important value that affects all members of Canadian society. The committee also reflected on the diversity of perspectives and the challenges that the proposed Charter could bring to Quebec, as well as what proactive measures could be taken by the Canadian Council of Churches.
The group also voiced concern with the apparent speed that the Parti Québécois is moving to implement the Charter, and further expressed hope that the government will engage in greater dialogue with all members of Quebec society, especially religious communities. Members of the CIRG pray for all persons of different faith traditions, and strongly encourage ecumenical and interfaith collaboration in addressing these important discussions which impact all members of Canadian society.
