On March 21, 2025, as we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, The Canadian Council of Churches and the Commission on Justice and Peace stand in solidarity with those who have endured the pain of racial prejudice. We recognize that racism, as Pierre Berton so aptly stated, “is a refuge for the ignorant. It seeks to divide and to destroy. It is the enemy of freedom and deserves to be met head-on and stamped out.”
As followers of Christ, we are called to be agents of reconciliation and justice. We cannot remain silent in the face of such injustice. To equip and inspire the Christian community in this vital work, the Commission on Justice and Peace, through its Anti-Racism Working Group, has developed “Journey to the Well: An Ecumenical Devotional Towards Anti-Racism.”
This devotional is more than just a collection of readings; it is a spiritual resource designed to:
- Anchor our work in Scripture: We believe the Bible provides essential guidance and wisdom for dismantling racism.
- Integrate faith and action: Our Christian faith should be the driving force behind our commitment to antiracism.
- Foster spiritual depth: Through deeper engagement with Scripture and prayer, we can build a stronger foundation for our actions.
- Amplify lived experiences: The devotional features the powerful stories and voices of 21 individuals who have personally experienced racism, reminding us of the human cost of prejudice.
We believe that true and lasting change flows from a profound connection with our faith. It is in this wellspring of spiritual strength that we find the courage and compassion to challenge injustice.
Chief Dan George reminds us that “the heart never knows the colour of the skin.” As Christians, we are called to see the inherent dignity and worth of every person, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. We are called to embody the kind of love that transcends all divisions.
What legacy will we leave? Rosa Parks, on her 77th birthday, expressed her desire “to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom and equality and justice and prosperity for all people.” Let us embrace this vision and commit ourselves to building a world where justice and peace prevail.
