The Canadian Council of Churches has long advocated for the use of the United Nations Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as the foundation for improved relations with Indigenous Peoples and as a framework for reconciliation.
On June 21, 2021, recognized as National Indigenous Peoples Day, General Secretary of the Council, Pastor Peter Noteboom issued a letter to the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. The letter took note of the passage of Bill C-15 and looked forward to the implementation of the United Nations Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
