Unity and Peace: O’Gara Ecumenical Essay Contest

Fostering the next generation of Canadian ecumenical leaders

Are you a student at a theological school, seminary, or doctoral program? Are you passionate about Christian unity and peace? Would you like to win a cash prize and meet leaders and scholars in the Canadian ecumenical movement?

This year, The Canadian Council of Churches is launching a new initiative – the annual, fully bilingual Unity and Peace: O’Gara Ecumenical Essay Contest.

This essay contest fosters the ecumenical formation of emerging theologians and church leaders by encouraging students to engage in theological reflection on themes relevant for the ecumenical movement in Canada. Organized by the Commission on Faith and Witness, with the support and participation of all other bodies of the Council, this essay contest honours the internationally renowned Canadian ecumenist and educator Professor Margaret O’Gara.

The 2026-2027 themes are ‘Theology of Christian Citizenship’ and ‘Confronting Racism within the Church’. Essays that touch on these themes are particularly invited, but submissions on other topics relevant to justice, peace, ecumenism, and ecumenical relationships will be gladly received.

Essays can be written in English or French. Canadian students and international students studying in Canada are eligible to enter. Three winners will receive cash awards and will be invited to present their essays at an ecumenical event where they will have an opportunity to network with seasoned Canadian ecumenists. Entries must be received by January 15, 2027. Winners will be notified by March 15, 2027.
